Emily Phillips

Experienced Clinical Psychologist with Specialization in Anxiety, Grief and Bereavement

Emily’s qualifications are a Bachelor of Arts with first class honours in psychology from the University of Sydney, and a Master of Clinical Psychology from the University of New South Wales.

Emily has over fifteen years of experience as a clinical psychologist, and has worked for much of this time in public hospitals, which has given her a strong understanding of the issues individuals and their families face when entering and navigating the health system. This background has fostered her interests in concerns around adjustment to illness (in oneself or in a family member or friend) and coping with grief and bereavement (associated with death or with other losses brought about by ill health).

In both the hospital system and in private practice Emily has experience helping people with varying levels of depression and anxiety, from milder through to more severe forms. With respect to anxiety, Emily is skilled at providing assessment and treatment of various anxiety disorders, including social anxiety, generalised anxiety, phobias, mixed anxiety and depression, performance anxiety, and panic attacks.

In addition, Emily has an interest in enhancing intimate relationships through couple therapy.

Emily believes strongly in the necessity of creating a warm, compassionate, non-judgemental atmosphere in which concerns can be addressed collaboratively in a way which addresses each client’s specific needs. She is committed to giving the best of herself and her experience to every client, in every session.

In terms of her therapeutic approach, Emily’s primary training is in cognitive behaviour therapy, and she also uses approaches such as motivational interviewing and schema therapy according to the needs and preferences of individual clients. She has considerable experience adapting therapy to fit clients’ varying requirements: for those with more circumscribed or more complex problems, those desiring shorter- or longer-term therapy, and for people of differing age groups and cultural backgrounds.

During her career, Emily has given over 30 seminar and conference presentations to groups of clients, psychologists, health professionals and students on a variety of topics, particularly regarding the emotional impact of serious illnesses such as cancer. She has also provided supervision and training to clinical psychology students, medical students, nurses and genetic counsellors.

Emily is fully registered with the Psychology Board of Australia, holds specialist endorsement as a clinical psychologist, and is a member of the Australian Clinical Psychology Association.
